Well it's 12 months to go, so it seems worth establishing a successor thread to POTUS 2012.

Hillary seems to have the Democratic nomination all stitched up, unless Bernie Sanders does a Corbyn.

But the very large list of Republican contenders provides us with a rich seam of out and out nut jobs, creationists, bigots, gay bashers, mysogynists and swaggerers, and that's just Donald Trump. Seriously, the list also includes Jeb, who quite astonishingly may be the thickest Bush yet, and a retired neuro surgeon called Ben Carson who is just incredible value on the Wingnut scale.

It is magnificently bonkers, and yet simultaneously quite terrifying. The UK electorate clearly has a majority of venal twats and selfish short-sighted idiots who have just handed the Tories another 5 years to oppress poorer people and drive benefits claimants to the brink of suicide, but the world's sole super power may be about to put itself in the hands of a grade one fuckwit for the first time since Ronald Reagan (well okay, since GW Bush).

Look upon these works, ye Mailwatchers, and despair.

If Hilary doesn't win, we're screwed.

If Trump wins, I'm investing in a fall-out shelter.

Ditto Carson, who's the frontrunner at the last count. I have no idea how that man made it through medical school.

I'm just disappointed that Rick Perry has already dropped out of the running, purely on the basis of how much comedic material we've been deprived. Jon Stewart's takedown of Perry's 'ooops' moment four years ago still cracks me up even to this day.

I have a theory that at some point, he decided to try some weird experimental surgery on his own brain.

I know that a well-informed American could throw Farage or Cameron back at me, but there really is something very wrong indeed with a world that takes Trump seriously.

Latino children tell Donald Trump: “F**k you, racist f**k!”

I love the "I just look illegal" shirt...

Put on the banjo music from 'Deliverance' and get over to youtube for some predictably charming comments from the Good Ol' Boys.

I am no great Obama fan, but this is a great put-down of the Republican candidates

Get the point, but those kids are insufferable.

Would like to see Bernie Sanders win the Democrats nomination, but I don't see him having the muscle to overcome the Hilary Clinton juggernaut despite a well received campaign so far.

The modern day US Republican party is badly devoid of any significant figurehead to run for POTUS that you could associate with either a traditional New England style Republican, or one that fell behind the Rockefeller's - Michael Blomberg is the only name I can conjure up that has any recognition in that area and I doubt he wants to run for the presidents office.

My abiding impression of US politics is that there are very few "swing voters".
If asked about politics most will describe themselves as a Republican or a Democrat, who will vote that way, or not vote if the candidate is wrong for them.

I extrapolate through a bit of number fiddling and a bit of guesswork that the democrats outnumber the republicans, but are overall less likely to vote.

Hillary (like any democratic nominee) can win of she can mobilize the various strands of Democratic support.
