Probably be a short thread but this made me lol
Russian vetoes are putting UN security council's legitimacy at risk, says US

The United States has warned that Russia’s continued blanket use of its UN veto will jeopardise the security council’s long-term legitimacy and could lead the US and like-minded countries to bypass it as a decision-making body.
Could do?

They're not to worried about using the veto themselves, cough, Israel.

I think they might have done a bit of bypassing in the past too, cough, Iraq...

Kind of telling that you have to go all the way to the Australian press to find out about this. More top centrism from the pigfucker.

Quote:
Secret cables reveal the British government negotiated with Saudi Arabia to back its elevation to the world’s top human rights body, the UN Human Rights Council, despite the fact it is one of the worst human rights violators.

Classified cables, translated by The Australian, reveal British Prime Minister David Cameron’s government engaged in talks with Saudi Arabia about a vote trade to support each other’s election to the UNHRC — the body responsible for the protection of human rights around the world.

The documents indicate Britain initiated the backroom talks by asking Saudi Arabia for its support ahead of the November 2013 UNHRC elections. The Saudi regime has beheaded more people this year than Islamic State and has an appalling record of killing or lashing people who speak out, are homosexual or commit adultery. Britain and Saudi Arabia were elected to the UNHRC, which has 47 member states.

Meanwhile...

Quote:
An international campaign is underway to stop the execution of a young Saudi Arabian man sentenced to death for his role in the 2012 Arab Spring pro-democracy protests.

Ali al-Nimr, who was arrested at the age of 17, is the nephew of a high-profile dissident in Saudi Arabia, which has one of the highest execution rates in the world.

Authorities have accused him of attacking their security forces, but his lawyer said Nimr's confession was made after he was tortured.

Nimr now faces "crucifixion", which human rights groups say means that he will be beheaded and then placed on public display.

But then it's only ever the left that comes under fire for links to extremists.

Looks like the Saudis are putting that Human Rights Council spot to good use.

Quote:
GENEVA — In a U-turn at the United Nations Human Rights Council, Western governments dropped plans Wednesday for an international inquiry into human rights violations by all parties in the war in Yemen that has killed thousands of civilians in the last six months.

When are we going to withdraw from the UN to form a Disunited British Nations? It has one security council seat in which speeches and gazes are given to the navel.
