Reminds me of the poor silly fuckers I knew who joined the Ra. For every genuine fanatic, there's a dozen empty heads filled with shite by some cunt prepared to fight till the last drop of someone else's blood.

Mosul has fallen to Iraqi forces

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/ ... tate-mosul

Quote:
Iraq’s prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, has declared victory over Islamic State forces in Mosul after nearly nine months of bitter fighting to displace the extremist group from the city where it proclaimed its “caliphate”.

Abadi, dressed in black military uniform, travelled to Mosul on Sunday to formally reclaim the devastated city, now a shadow of the thriving hub seized by extremists in 2014.

Thousands have died, nearly a million residents have fled, and swaths of the city have been reduced to ruins during the gruelling campaign, including the ancient al-Nuri mosque and minaret that were one of its best known landmarks.

We should rejoice at this news.

She should serve her time like everyone else. We can have a debate about whether prison is to rehabilitate or punish but most people who get there have a backstory of circumstances and taking foolish turns.

Good gods, after years of 'your' being used incorrectly he comes up with 'your're'...

It's all too much...

Fuck the Daesh - and fuck whatever successor movement inevitably rises from their ashes.

Quite, Bones. It would be nice to think that this victory over Daesh represented the end of anything beyond that fight, and there's certainly an argument made that a territorial war has more meaning here than vs. Al quaeda.

However, best case scenario is that the movement is now fractured into enough splinters that none are effective. Most likely case, they'll fuck off and rise up elsewhere.

The problem with fighting fanatics is they don't stop being fanatics when the boss fanatic drops off the perch.

This victory over Daesh takes us back to Square One and we, or at least Iraq, are back to the febrile sectarian, Shiia dominated atmosphere that started all this in the first place.

A million displaced people, countless dead in the slaughter within Mosul and the surrounding villages, and for what? There is still no plan A+1.

The top brass among the lunatic beard-burners fled weeks ago and so the cycle begins all over again while they regroup, re-arm and set their sights on revenge in the name of the faith that they are desperate to die for.

There is no cause for celebration, The lessons of the ebb and flow suggest quite the opposite.

Indeed, true.

The only way to stop an ideology would be genocide*, and I believe that we still see that as unacceptable.

*Caesar and the Druids, for example.

I may be well off the mark, but I'm of the mindset that they're more desperate for other people to die for it rather than themselves.

Aye, it might be worth putting our rejoicing back in our trousers, just for the moment.

The world’s lack of outrage over tens of thousands of civilian deaths in Mosul is shameful

Quote:
Hoshyar Zebari, the Kurdish leader and former Iraqi finance and foreign minister, told me in an interview last week: “Kurdish intelligence believes that over 40,000 civilians have been killed as a result of massive firepower used against them, especially by the Federal Police, air strikes and Isis itself.”
